Mayfield is 1-7 against Fonda-Fultonville since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Panthers will challenge the Valley Hawks at 4:30 p.m.
Things were looking good for Mayfield after they put the first run on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 7-4 to Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville.

Cubby Roth (C) put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs.
Roth (C) wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Landon Conyne, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Patrick Allen also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.
Meanwhile, Fonda-Fultonville waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 3-2 W against the Eagles. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Valley Hawks have posted since May 1, 2024.
Like Mayfield, Fonda-Fultonville also got a great game from a two-way player: Jake Hernigle. Throwing, Hernigle didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over 5.1 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Jacob Sheldon pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave Hernigle a new career-high. At the plate, Hernigle went 1-for-2 with four stolen bases and one run, while Sheldon went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. With that strong performance, Hernigle is now averaging an impressive 1.2 stolen bases per game.
In other batting news, Jack Sheldon and Sam Huckans did most of the damage at the plate: Sheldon got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, while Huckans went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Fonda-Fultonville pushed their record up to 9-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Mayfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mayfield has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Fonda-Fultonville struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mayfield might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Fonda-Fultonville in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Panthers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
