Softball Game Preview: University City Centurions vs. Mira Mesa Marauders

The University City Centurions will head out to face off against the Mira Mesa Marauders at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

University City is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Scripps Ranch on Tuesday. They came up short against the Falcons, falling 10-1.

University City got a good showing from Riley Conklin, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Conklin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times Mira Mesa and Clairemont have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Tuesday. The Marauders might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 4-3 to the Chieftains, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

Mira Mesa's defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-11. As for University City, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-10-1 record this season.

University City suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Mira Mesa in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Can the Centurions avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
