Recap: Compton Tarbabes vs. Verbum Dei Jesuit Eagles
The Compton Tarbabes's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their eighth straight loss. They fell 61-52 to Verbum Dei Jesuit. Compton was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Verbum Dei Jesuit apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2019.
Compton's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Jashon Finley, who scored 21 points along with four steals, and Oshon Mitchell who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds. Finley is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games he's played.
Verbum Dei Jesuit's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ryan Figueroa led the charge by scoring 21 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Figueroa is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last seven games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Harper Whitman, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and six steals.
Compton's defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 4-12. As for Verbum Dei Jesuit, their win bumped their record up to 7-8.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Compton will take on Lakewood at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Lakewood presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Compton in California (Lakewood is ranked 122nd, while Compton is ranked 1085th). As for Verbum Dei Jesuit, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Animo Venice at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Animo Venice is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 64.6 points per game.
