Softball Recap: Cordova Comes Up Short

Cordova extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 4-9 in the process. They came up short against the Kennedy Cougars, falling 16-6. The Lancers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cougars earlier this season, when they won 9-5.

Briel Brookins made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Sarah-Irene Njuki, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.

As for Kennedy, their win bumped their record up to 7-10. With that victory, they brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

On Kennedy's side, Kaylena Ogle was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Ogle was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Kennedy got a massive performance out of Kira Griffin, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Gia Smith was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cordova will venture away from home to square off against Grant at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lancers are facing the Pacers at the right time seeing as the Pacers are stuck on an 11-game losing streak. As for Kennedy, they will face off against McClatchy at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 6.7 runs per game this season.
