The Girard Yellowjackets will head out to challenge the Corry Beavers at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Girard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Monday just wasn't the day for Girard's offense. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Fairview on Monday. The Yellowjackets' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, Corry was not the first on the board on Monday, but they got there more often. They put the hurt on Conneaut Area with a sharp 9-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Beavers, who have now won four contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Karson Chamberlin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Corry is 4-2 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Chamberlin was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carson Braswell, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.
Corry is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Girard, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Girard has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Corry struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Girard's way against Corry when the teams last played on April 9th, as Girard made off with an 8-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Yellowjackets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
