Payette hadn't beaten New Plymouth on the road since March 21, 2019 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. Payette walked away with a 12-8 win over New Plymouth. With that victory, the Pirates brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.
Jahzyon Sylva made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Sylva was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Darrien Pecunia, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jayden Barrera, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Fruitland pushed their record up to 10-0 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. As for Payette, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Fruitland hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .402. However, it's not like Payette struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Fruitland beat Payette 12-7 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Fruitland since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
