Los Altos is a perfect 3-0 against San Mateo since February of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Los Altos Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the San Mateo Bearcats at 4:00 p.m. Los Altos is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
While Los Altos didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 4-1 win over Woodside on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Kaylyn Cox spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Los Altos saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Zoe Aguilar, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double. That's the most RBI Aguilar has posted since back in March of 2024. Another was Makayla Mase, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, San Mateo was not the first on the board last Tuesday, but they got there more often. They walked away with an 11-6 victory over Mountain View. The win continues a trend for the Bearcats in their matchups with the Spartans: they've now won four in a row.
Celia Hernandez made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. Furthermore, she didn't allow a single earned run, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, San Mateo let Jana Davies and Alice Han run wild. Davies scored three runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Han scored two runs and stole Five bases. while going 1-for-5. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliyah Scheller, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Los Altos pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for San Mateo, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Los Altos hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .348. However, it's not like San Mateo struggles in that department as they've averaged .337. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Los Altos beat San Mateo 10-5 in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Will Los Altos repeat their success, or does San Mateo have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
