The University Lab Cubs will be taking part in a tournament against the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. University Lab knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past three games -- so hopefully Ascension Catholic likes a good challenge.
University Lab's tournament run continued when they took on St. Joseph's - Plaucheville on Friday. University Lab put the hurt on St. Joseph's - Plaucheville with a sharp 15-7 win. Considering the Cubs have won five contests by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Gabby Fontenot made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). Furthermore, she didn't allow a single walk, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, London Harvey was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing Three bases. while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anna Kate Ruebsamen, who went 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and two RBI.
University Lab kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Ascension Catholic had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Redstickers.
Like University Lab, Ascension Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Ava Gauthe. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. Gauthe has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sydney Viallon, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3. Emma Delatte was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
University Lab is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.6 runs over those games. Ascension Catholic's record is now 8-1.
University Lab couldn't quite get it done against Ascension Catholic when the teams last played back in March of 2020 as they fell 6-2. Can University Lab avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
