Softball Preview: Serra Catholic Eagles vs. St. Joseph Spartans
The Serra Catholic Eagles will head out on the road to take on the St. Joseph Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Serra Catholic will be strutting in after a win while St. Joseph will be coming in after a defeat.
Serra Catholic will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs last Wednesday, then bounced right back against Leechburg on Wednesday. The Eagles were the clear victors by a 15-3 margin over the Blue Devils. Considering the Eagles' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

Kelly Morrissey made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Keyara Watkins was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Alonna Morton was another key player, scoring four runs while going 2-for-4.
Serra Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Leechburg only managed six hits.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph was not able to break out of their rough patch last Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 18-1 to Ellis.
St. Joseph's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Serra Catholic, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-4.
Serra Catholic took their win against St. Joseph when the teams last played back in March of 2023 by a conclusive 16-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
