Football Game Preview: Marion Wildcats vs. Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs

The Marion Wildcats will take on the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Marion comes in on three and Mahomet-Seymour on four.

On Friday, Marion humbled Mattoon with a 49-21 victory. The Wildcats pushed the score to 49-14 by the end of the third, a deficit the Greenwave cut but never quite recovered from.

Callahan Roper had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 435 yards and six touchdowns while completing 85.3% of his passes. Those 435 passing yards gave him a new career-high. Junious Thomas was another key player, picking up 132 receiving yards and one TD.

Marion didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Mattoon to a completion percentage of just 44.1%. The team can thank Andre Jones for the heroic effort on defense: he. Marion wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 83.3%.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mahomet-Seymour). They blew past Richwoods 63-14 on Friday. That's two games straight that the Bulldogs have won by exactly 49 points.

One reason for the win was Mahomet-Seymour's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Pierce Douglas was especially locked on to Richwoods' QB and sacked him twice.

Marion's record is now 6-3. As for Mahomet-Seymour, their record now sits at an identical 6-3.

The upcoming contest will be a clash of competing strengths. Marion has relied on air attacks this season and has averaged 320.8 passing yards per game. Mahomet-Seymour, on the other hand, has relied on a stout run game: they average 239.4 rushing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Saturday? There's only one way to find out.

Marion took their victory against Mahomet-Seymour in their previous matchup back in August of 2019 by a conclusive 34-13 score.
