Baseball Game Preview: Muleshoe Mules vs. Roosevelt Eagles

Muleshoe is 6-1 against Roosevelt since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Mules will face off against the Eagles at 12:00 p.m. Muleshoe is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.

Muleshoe will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Friday, then bounced right back against Friona on Monday. The Mules blew past the Chieftans 14-3. The game was the first time the Mules have beaten the Chieftans on their field since April 4, 2015.

Jake Villanueva made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 3-for-4. Muleshoe is undefeated when Villanueva posts two or more runs, but 5-9 otherwise.

In other batting news, Muleshoe let Donovan Moreno and Nehemiah Sanchez run wild. Moreno went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Sanchez went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Moreno is becoming a predictor of Muleshoe's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-9 when he doesn't). Ryan Dominguez was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Roosevelt fell victim to Littlefield and their airtight pitching crew two weeks ago. They lost 14-0 to the Wildcats. The Eagles just can't catch a break and have now endured six losses in a row.

The victory got Muleshoe back to even at 9-9. As for Roosevelt, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-11.

Everything went Muleshoe's way against Roosevelt when the teams last played back in March, as Muleshoe made off with a 12-3 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mules since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
