Football Recap: Cayson Maupin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sunnyvale over Pleasant Grove

Sunnyvale lost against Pleasant Grove back in September of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Sunnyvale took a 42-30 hit to the loss column at the hands of Pleasant Grove. While losing is never fun, Sunnyvale can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 167th, while Pleasant Grove is ranked 50th).

Sunnyvale's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cayson Maupin, who threw for 314 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for 59 yards. Maupin's passing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 302 passing yards. Hudson Leonard was in the mix too, providing Sunnyvale with two scores.

Having lost for the first time this season, Sunnyvale fell to 4-1. As for Pleasant Grove, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 4-1.

Sunnyvale and Pleasant Grove will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next contests. The next time Sunnyvale sees the field they'll take on Ferris at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. As for Pleasant Grove, their break will end when they face North Lamar at 7:00 p.m. on October 10.
