Rancho Verde and Rancho Christian are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2023, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will challenge the Eagles at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Rancho Verde sitting on five straight wins and Rancho Christian on three.
Rancho Verde will bounce into Tuesday's contest after beating Canyon Springs, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mustangs came out on top against the Cougars by a score of 4-1 on Thursday.
The team relied heavily on Jacob Cabral, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Sebas Cazares, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Rancho Christian won against Vista del Lago on Thursday with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Saturday. The Eagles blew past Perris 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won six games by six runs or more so far this season.
Spencer Horner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. Rancho Christian is 4-1 when Horner posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise.
In other batting news, Cylis Proffitt was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Sean Downs was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
Rancho Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .536 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
Rancho Christian's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-5. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Rancho Verde, their record now sits at 10-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Rancho Verde has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Rancho Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Rancho Verde might still be hurting after the 8-0 loss they got from Rancho Christian in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
