Softball Recap: Alameda Pirates vs. Jefferson Saints
Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Alameda). They put the hurt on the Jefferson Saints with a sharp 28-4 win on Tuesday. The Pirates might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 13 runs or more this season.
Alia Gutierrez made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Gutierrez was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-5.
In other batting news, Alameda got a massive performance out of Andi Padilla, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and four RBI. What's more, Padilla also racked up two hits, the mostshe's had since back in August. Another player making a difference was Peyton Trujillo, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Alameda kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
The victory (which was Alameda's third in a row) raised their record to 7-6. As for Jefferson, their defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-7.
Alameda will take on Fort Lupton at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Alameda is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season. As for Jefferson, they will play host again on Thursday to welcome Aurora Central, where first pitch is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Jefferson is facing Aurora Central at the right time seeing as Aurora Central is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
