Basketball Game Preview: Volcano Vista Hawks vs. Rio Grande Ravens

Volcano Vista is 6-0 against Rio Grande since January of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. It'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Volcano Vista Hawks face off against the Rio Grande Ravens at 7:00 p.m. Volcano Vista will be strutting in after a win while Rio Grande will be coming in after a defeat.

Volcano Vista is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Cleveland, who was ranked 15th at the time (Volcano Vista was ranked 12th). Volcano Vista snuck past Cleveland with a 46-41 victory on Friday.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Volcano Vista to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mia Zuniga, who posted 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Those 17 points gave Zuniga a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Zoey Loretto, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards.

Meanwhile, Rio Grande took a blow against Albuquerque on Thursday, falling 52-19.

Volcano Vista has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-8 record this season. As for Rio Grande, their loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-17.

Everything came up roses for Volcano Vista against Rio Grande in their previous matchup back in January of 2022, as the team secured a 76-6 win. Does Volcano Vista have another victory up their sleeve, or will Rio Grande turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
