Recap: Cherokee Trail Cougars vs. Mullen Mustangs
On Saturday, the Cherokee Trail Cougars faced the Mullen Mustangs in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Cherokee Trail was the clear victor by a 61-40 margin over Mullen. The result was nothing new for Cherokee Trail, who have now won three games by 21 points or more so far this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cherokee Trail to victory, but perhaps none more so than Delainey Miller, who scored 22 points along with 5 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which Miller has scored at least 25% of Cherokee Trail's points. Another player making a difference was Madeline Gibbs, who scored 10 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Despite the loss, Mullen still got an impressive performance from Allison Schwertner, who scored 15 points along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The game was Schwertner's third in a row with at least ten points. Tatum Jones was another key contributor, scoring 8 points along with 6 rebounds.
The win for Cherokee Trail keeps them at an undefeated 4-0. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.8 points per game. As for Mullen, their loss dropped their record down to 2-1.
Cherokee Trail will head out on the road to face off against Chaparral at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Chaparral will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while Cherokee Trail is ranked first). Mullen will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Boulder at 5:00 p.m. on December 5th. Hopefully Boulder focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Thursday.
