Top 25 high school football rankings presented by Powerade

The showdown is set. No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) each rolled to big wins Friday setting a huge meeting between 1 vs. 2 in the Trinity League vs. USA showcase at St. John Bosco High School on Sept. 14.

The Monarchs cruised to a 71-21 win over Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.), back-to-back Arizona 5A state champs, as 2020 USC commit Bryce Young threw for a school record 528 yards and seven touchdowns. Mater Dei is 3-0 and has outscored its opposition 176-40.

St. Frances Academy, meanwhile, shutout its second consecutive opponent beating American Collegiate Academy (Clearwater, Fla.) 64-0. It's now outscored the opposition 168-13 through its first three games.

Three new teams joined this week's Power 25 high school football rankings presented by Powerade.

Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) went from the "Next 5" group to No. 20 after its 44-41 win over Centennial (Corona, Calif.) and Central (Miami), the first team out of the Top 25, jumped back in the rankings after beating Carol City (Miami) 49-26. Mentor (Ohio) also is in after beating St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) and St. Ignatius (Cleveland) in back-to-back weeks.

The best game of this week went down at Rutgers University between Top 25 teams – St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia) and St. John's (Washington, D.C.) – where the Philly power held on for a 34-30 win to move up six spots to No. 12. The loss drops the D.C. power from four to 16.

In a Top 25 matchup between IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and Northwestern (Miami, Fla.), the Ascenders improved to 2-0 with a 24-7 win over the back-to-back 6A state champs. IMG moves up one spot to No. 4 and Northwestern falls from 15 to 24.

DJ Uiagalelei and No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) had a huge showing in Las Vegas at the 2019 Polynesian Football Classic. The Braves rolled to a 49-7 win over Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) and Uiagalelei finished the night with six touchdowns. Beaux Collins caught four of his five touchdown passes.
