Preview: Union Academy Cardinals vs. Mount Airy Granite Bears
The Union Academy Cardinals will head out on the road to face off against the Mount Airy Granite Bears at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Union Academy is hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Last Friday, it was close, but Union Academy sidestepped South Stanly for a 14-12 win. The win was just what Union Academy needed coming off of a 38-6 defeat in their prior game.
Union Academy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nick Henry, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries. Parker St. clair was another key contributor, rushing for 65 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Union Academy's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Michael Hughes and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, Mount Airy put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They didn't even let Alleghany onto the board and left with a 53-0 victory. Fans of Mount Airy have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season ended as a blowout.
Mount Airy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Taeshon Martin, who rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries. Walker Stroup was in the mix as well, providing Mount Airy with two touchdowns.
Their wins bumped Union Academy to 2-8 and Mount Airy to 10-0.
Union Academy was dealt a bruising 75-0 loss at the hands of Mount Airy in their previous matchup back in November of 2021. Can Union Academy avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
