Basketball Recap: Mina Kinikini Key Part of a Team Effort in Cougars Win

Kearns posted their closest victory since November 26, 2024 on Monday. It was close, but they capped 2024 with a 40-37 win over the Juan Diego Catholic Soaring Eagle. That's more bragging rights for the Cougars, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Kearns got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Mina Kinikini out in front who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards. Lia Benson was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.

Kearns smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in ten consecutive contests.

Kearns' record is now 5-6. As for Juan Diego Catholic, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

Kearns will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Granger at 7:00 p.m. on January 10th. Granger will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Kearns surely won't give up without a fight. As for Juan Diego Catholic, they will square off against North Sanpete at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
