Southampton Academy has gone 7-2 against Fuqua recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Raiders will take on the Falcons at 4:30 p.m. Southampton Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Southampton Academy took a 16-run loss the last time they faced off against Isle of Wight Academy, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Raiders narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Chargers 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Raiders have posted since March 25th.
Southampton Academy saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ayden Darden, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run. Emerson Vaughan also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Fuqua, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 15-5 margin over The New Community School on Monday. The Falcons' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Josh Simon made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off only one hit. He has become a key player for Fuqua: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 2-7 otherwise. Simon was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jackson Hicks, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Fuqua is 2-1 when Hicks posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-7 otherwise. Luke Royall was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
The victory made it two in a row for Southampton Academy and bumps their season record up to 10-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.5 runs over those games. As for Fuqua, their victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-8.
Fuqua's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Southampton Academy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .332. It's a different story for Fuqua, though, as they've only averaged .193. Will they be able to contain Southampton Academy's hitters?
Southampton Academy took their win against Fuqua in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 20-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Raiders since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
