Basketball Recap: Thales Academy Rolesville Takes a Loss

Thales Academy Rolesville and Thales Academy Apex squared off in some playoff action on Tuesday, but Thales Academy Rolesville had to settle for second. They were dealt a 60-33 defeat at the hands of the Thales Academy Apex Titans. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 404th, while the Titans are ranked 156th).

Despite the loss, Thales Academy Rolesville saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Mary Niebauer posted 19 points and five boards. Another player making a difference was Julia Van Valkenburg, who scored nine points in addition to six rebounds and three steals.

Thales Academy Apex's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Anna Maass led the charge by putting up 16 points along with eight boards and five steals. Maass is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Kate Sproul was another key player, earning 11 points in addition to eight steals and six assists.

This is the second loss in a row for Thales Academy Rolesville and nudges their season record down to 13-11. As for Thales Academy Apex, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.

Thales Academy Rolesville does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Thales Academy Apex, they will square off against St. David's at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
