Basketball Recap: Hueneme Takes a Loss

Hueneme was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a blow against the Nordhoff Rangers, falling 82-46. Sadly, that's the third time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 60-48 back in December of 2024.

Hueneme's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayani Cortez, who went 6 of 12 en route to 16 points. Those 16 points gave Cortez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Joseph Richardson, who posted 13 points.

Nordhoff's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cayden Budlong led the charge by going 6 for 13 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven assists and five rebounds. Budlong has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Quincy Cooper also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Hueneme's loss dropped their record down to 2-22. As for Nordhoff, the win snapped their losing streak at five games and leaves them with a 7-17 record.

Hueneme didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 71-63 defeat against Trinity Classical Academy on the 31st. As for Nordhoff, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 60-36 loss against Channel Islands on the 31st.
