The Gilmer County Titans will head out on the road to face off against the Williamstown Yellowjackets at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Gilmer County has four straight victories, Williamstown has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Gilmer County proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 16) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Wahama, sneaking past 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Titans have posted since April 5, 2024.
Kaydee Martin and Paige Montgomery did most of the damage at the plate: Martin went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double, while Montgomery went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Kaelyn Mullins was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
Gilmer County hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least two batters in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Williamstown lost 13-5 to St. Marys on Tuesday.
Shayle Montgomery was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
Gilmer County pushed their record up to 12-5 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Williamstown, their loss dropped their record down to 6-12.
Williamstown's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Gilmer County has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Williamstown, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Gilmer County's sizable advantage in that area, the Yellowjackets will need to find a way to close that gap.
Gilmer County took their victory against Williamstown when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
