Baseball Recap: McCann Tech Takes a Loss

McCann Tech made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Smith Vo-Tech, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Hornets fell just short of the Vikings by a score of 8-6 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Hornets have suffered since April 1, 2025.

Hayden Barrett was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits. Barrett was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. McCann Tech is 3-1 when Barrett posts two or more stolen bases, but 1-2 otherwise.

In other batting news, Kale Kondel and Nolan Booth stepped up to the plate in a big way. Kondel went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run, while Booth went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Hunter Lancto also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

McCann Tech's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Smith Vo-Tech, with the victory, they broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-4.

Coming up, McCann Tech will host Westfield Technical Academy at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tigers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.9 runs per game this season, so the Hornets' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Smith Vo-Tech, they will head out to take on Palmer at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season.
