Basketball Game Preview: Covington Owls vs. Avalon Eagles

Covington has gone 6-1 against Avalon recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. It'll be Battle of the Birds when the Covington Owls face off against the Avalon Eagles at 7:15 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Avalon is hoping to do what Morgan couldn't on Friday: put an end to Covington's winning streak, which now stands at six games. Covington couldn't have asked for a better start to 2025 than the 57-18 blowout they got against Morgan. That 39 point margin sets a new team best for the Owls this season.

Jeremiah Cunningham continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 6 of 12 on his way to 14 points along with eight boards and four steals. That's the most steals he has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Ivan Mendez, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards.

Covington smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in 14 consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Avalon entered their tilt with Morgan back in December of 2024 with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They blew past the Eagles 60-20.

Avalon is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.9 points per game. As for Covington, their win bumped their record up to 11-4.

Covington was able to grind out a solid victory over Avalon in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, winning 47-39. Will Covington repeat their success, or does Avalon have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
