Danielle Spiegel made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.
In other batting news, St. Mary's got a massive performance out of Ella Dovey, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs Dovey has posted since back in May of 2024. Renee Henning was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.
St. Mary's was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .606. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday Mount Mercy Academy's undefeated season almost came to an end. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-7 win over Charter School for Applied Tech. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Magic have posted since April 26, 2024.
Taylor Jahn made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Jahn wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abbagail Hunt, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one run. Another was Tessa Freedenberg, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases and one run.
St. Mary's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-3. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Mount Mercy Academy, their record is now 4-0.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. St. Mary's hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Mount Mercy Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
St. Mary's was able to grind out a solid win over Mount Mercy Academy when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lancers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
