Recap: Velma Jackson Falcons vs. Canton Tigers
The Velma Jackson Falcons's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight loss. They were the victim of a tough 56-32 defeat at the hands of Canton. While losing is never fun, Velma Jackson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 190th, while Canton is ranked 23rd).
Canton was led to victory by Shamira Morton and Na'Miya Davis. Morton dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Davis scored 18 points along with four steals. The game was Morton's eighth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Emilyah Sutton, who scored four points.
Velma Jackson bumped their record down to 1-6 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Canton, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Velma Jackson's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pisgah at 6:00 p.m. on December 12th. Pisgah has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Canton, they will head out on the road to face off against Yazoo County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Yazoo County will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
