Softball Game Preview: Serra Catholic Eagles vs. Ellis

Serra Catholic has gone a perfect 8-0 against Ellis recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Eagles will head out to square off against Ellis at 3:30 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.

Serra Catholic made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Monessen, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Eagles were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over the Greyhounds on Tuesday. That looming 18-3 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Eagles yet this season.

Kelly Morrissey was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four RBI and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Giana Foster, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. She also brought in two RBI, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Bailee Dayton, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Serra Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Ellis owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Tuesday. Everything went their way against St. Joseph as they made off with an 8-0 victory.

The win (which was Serra Catholic's third in a row) raised their record to 3-4. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Ellis, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-2.

Everything went Serra Catholic's way against Ellis when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Serra Catholic made off with an 18-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
