Basketball Recap: Desert Pines Comes Up Short in High-Profile Matchup with Coronado

On Monday, Desert Pines faced Coronado in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Desert Pines Jaguars took a 60-46 bruising from the Coronado Cougars. The Jaguars were probably out for revenge after losing 53-52 to them when the teams met back in January of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Desert Pines' loss came despite strong showings from Mya Harper and Anaiah Brown. Harper went 6 for 13 on her way to 15 points in addition to five boards and four steals, while Brown posted 13 points and seven rebounds. Harper continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Holman, who scored four points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Desert Pines smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Coronado was led to victory by Scarlet Lopez and Jayliana Glothon. Lopez had 16 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals, while Glothon earned 13 points in addition to six assists and five steals. That's the most steals Lopez has posted since back in January of 2024. Harmony Rogers was another key player, putting up ten points and seven boards.

Desert Pines has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season. As for Coronado, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

Desert Pines will take on Clark at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Desert Pines is facing Clark at the right time seeing as Clark is stuck on an 18-game losing streak. As for Coronado, they will square off against Desert Oasis at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Coronado is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.5 points per game this season.
