Baseball Recap: Friday's Victory Is Carlsbad's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Huntington Beach, Carlsbad was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They never let the JSerra Catholic Lions get on the board and left with a 1-0 victory. For the Lancers, this counts as revenge for the 2-1 win the Lions walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

Hunter Dawson and Benjamin Lopez dominated on the mound. Dawson didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched, while Lopez didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Lopez also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Carlsbad is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-4 otherwise.

At the plate, Carlsbad's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Rob Bering, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base.

Carlsbad has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. This is the second loss in a row for JSerra Catholic and nudges their season record down to 5-5.

Carlsbad will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Rancho Bernardo at 4:00 p.m. on April 9. As for JSerra Catholic, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Servite at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Servite's pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so JSerra Catholic's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
