Softball Recap: Sumner Wins Going Away Against Plant City

Sumner had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Plant City on Thursday. The Stingrays blew past the Raiders 8-2. The win continues a trend for the Stingrays in their matchups with the Raiders: they've now won six in a row.

Victoria Baker was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Baker wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Aliyanis Stubbs, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4. What's more, Stubbs posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in February. Karlee Salisbury was another, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

Sumner's record is now 11-8. As for Plant City, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 12-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sumner will head out to take on Plant at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Stingrays' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Plant City, they are taking a road trip to face off against Riverview at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The Sharks will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Raiders surely won't give up without a fight.
