Softball Recap: Marquette's Victory on Tuesday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Marquette entered their tilt with Putnam County on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 11-1 victory. Considering the Crusaders have won 11 matches by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Savanah Erickson made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five). She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Taylor Cuchra and Hunter Hopkins did most of the damage at the plate: Cuchra went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Hopkins went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave Hopkins a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Avery Durdan, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.

Marquette was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in five consecutive contests.

Marquette's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Putnam County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-11 record this season.

Marquette will have a chance to go back-to-back against Putnam County: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
