Basketball Recap: Nitro Comes Up Short in High-Profile Contest with Fairmont Senior

On Saturday, Nitro faced Fairmont Senior in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Nitro Wildcats fell to the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears 45-39. The game marked the Wildcats' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Nitro lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Landon Poniatowski, who posted eight points and nine boards. He is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Derek Lowe, who earned nine points.

This is the second loss in a row for Nitro and nudges their season record down to 15-6. As for Fairmont Senior, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Nitro will head out to take on Winfield at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Nitro is facing Winfield at the right time seeing as Winfield is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Fairmont Senior, they will venture away from home to face off against Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Bridgeport comes in on 17 and Fairmont Senior on five.
