Basketball Recap: Arrupe Jesuit Generals vs. Englewood Pirates
The Arrupe Jesuit Generals's game last Tuesday was a tough loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Englewood 57-54. The high flying offensive effort was a huge turnaround for Arrupe Jesuit considering their 24-point performance the match before.
Leading Arrupe Jesuit to victory were Xavier Martinez and Ari Cowans. Martinez scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Cowans scored 28 points along with two steals. That makes it six consecutive games in which Cowans has scored at least a third of Arrupe Jesuit's points. Oscar Padilla was another key contributor, scoring four points along with 11 rebounds and three steals.
Englewood's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Dominic Dever, who scored 25 points along with two steals, and Soren Singer who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 15 rebounds. Singer has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Owens, who scored five points along with six rebounds.
Arrupe Jesuit's win bumped their record up to 5-9. As for Englewood, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-12.
Arrupe Jesuit will be playing in front of their home fans against the Knights at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in DSST: Montview's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season. As for Englewood, they will head out on the road to take on the Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Colorado (Littleton is ranked 217th, while the Pirates are ranked 242nd).
