Baseball Recap: St. Marys Comes Up Short

St. Marys fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against South Harrison on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 7-6. The loss continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their meetings with the Hawks: they've now lost three in a row.

Casey Burkhammer led a balanced group of hitters, going 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. He has become a key player for St. Marys: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ayden Powell, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

St. Marys' defeat dropped their record down to 9-8. As for South Harrison, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Marys will face off against Poca at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Dots have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.8 runs per game on average), something the Blue Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for South Harrison, they will take on Moorefield at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
