Softball Recap: Vista Grande Spartans vs. Sunnyside Blue Devils
Vista Grande extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 11-16 in the process. They came up short against the Sunnyside Blue Devils, falling 8-1. The Spartans were not able to make up for their loss to the Blue Devils from their previous meeting back in March of 2019.
Vista Grande saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Daniela Valenzuela, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
As for Sunnyside, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 22-6-1. The result was nothing new for the Blue Devils, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
On Sunnyside's side, Ashley Rosthenhausler and Tatyana Vega were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Rosthenhausler struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Meanwhile, Vega pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Rosthenhausler has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Rosthenhausler went 1-for-4 with one home run, while Vega went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most doubles Vega has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Vianney Cruz, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Soleil Ponce, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
