Baseball Recap: Key West Takes a Loss

If Key West was feeling good fresh off their 17-7 takedown of Sports Leadership & Management last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Conchs fell just short of the Mater Academy Charter Lions by a score of 11-9 on Wednesday.

Key West got a good showing from Kasey Kasper, who pitched 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Kasper has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Nelson Ong made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs while going 1-for-3. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Kade Maltz was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Key West has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-9 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Mater Academy Charter, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 14-7-1.

Key West didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 14-4 win against Miami on the 4th. As for Mater Academy Charter, they have also already played their next game, a 10-0 loss against Westminster Christian on the 4th.
