Basketball Recap: Bessemer City Comes Up Short

Bessemer City lost against Burns back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Bessemer City Yellow Jackets took a 93-84 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Burns Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Yellow Jackets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 344th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 166th).

When it comes to explaining why Bessemer City lost, don't look at Josiah Guyton. Despite the final result, he went 11 for 14 on his way to 31 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Guyton a new career-high in points. Raheem Mcclure was another key player, going 9 of 17 en route to 19 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Bessemer City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive contests.

Burns found their leader in sophomore Jadon Beam, who went 11 for 14 on his way to 31 points and six rebounds. With that strong performance, Beam is now averaging an impressive 15.8 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Colby Putnam, who went 7 of 12 en route to 18 points and six boards.

Bessemer City has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-6 record this season. As for Burns, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-4.

Bessemer City wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 68-58 defeat against Highland Tech on the 17th. Burns has also already played their next contest, an 89-58 victory against East Gaston on the 17th.
