Basketball Recap: James Wood Takes a Loss

If James Wood was riding high fresh off their 74-12 takedown of Manassas Park last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The James Wood Colonels lost 64-41 to the Hampshire Trojans on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, the Colonels can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 143rd in Virginia, while the Trojans are ranked 45th in West Virginia).

When it comes to explaining why James Wood lost, don't look at Josie Russell. Despite the final result, she posted 21 points along with seven rebounds and five blocks. Those five blocks gave Russell a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Dayana Jackson, who put up four points.

James Wood's loss dropped their record down to 10-6. As for Hampshire, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. James Wood will head out to square off against Liberty at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Hampshire, they will head out on the road to take on Keyser at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
