Basketball Recap: Piper Conklin Key Part of a Team Effort in Buccaneers Win

There's no place like home for Laney, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 48-34 win over the South Brunswick Cougars on Tuesday. Given the Buccaneers' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 124th, while the Cougars are ranked 272nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Laney's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Piper Conklin led the charge by putting up nine points along with eight boards and six steals. Conklin is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Addison Dixon, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.

Laney smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in November of 2023.

Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Meryn Deutsch, who went 6 of 10 on her way to 16 points. The dominant performance also gave Deutsch a new career-high in blocks (two). Aubree Adams was another key player, posting three points along with six rebounds and three blocks.

Laney pushed their record up to 7-5 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.3 points per game. As for South Brunswick, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-4 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Laney will host Hoggard at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hoggard is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.4 points per game this season. As for South Brunswick, they will be playing in front of their home fans against North Brunswick at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. South Brunswick is facing North Brunswick at the right time seeing as North Brunswick is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
