Basketball Preview: Willis Wildkats vs. The Woodlands Highlanders
Willis is 1-9 against the Highlanders since November of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Willis Wildkats will head out on the road to challenge The Woodlands Highlanders at 1:00 p.m. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Willis scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 91-30 victory over Caney Creek at home. Given Willis' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 228th, while the Panthers are ranked 920th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sj Young was his usual excellent self, scoring 31 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Another player making a difference was Jermaine Bishop jr, who scored five points along with ten assists and seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, The Woodlands got the win against the Panthers on Wednesday by a conclusive 70-48. The Woodlands pushed the score to 55-32 by the end of the third, a deficit the Panthers cut but never quite recovered from.
Willis pushed their record up to 19-10 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.3 points per game. As for The Woodlands, their win bumped their record up to 16-12.
Willis was able to grind out a solid win over the Highlanders in their previous meeting back in January, winning 52-44. The rematch might be a little tougher for Willis since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
