Recap: Mater Dei Knights vs. Breese Central Cougars
On Thursday, the Mater Dei Knights faced the Breese Central Cougars in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mater Dei fell 47-35 to Breese Central. Mater Dei was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Breese Central apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Despite the defeat, Mater Dei saw an underclassman step up: Amelia Beer scored 14 points. Alyssa Koerkenmeier was another key contributor, scoring four points along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Mater Dei's defeat dropped their record down to 18-4. As for Breese Central, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-2.
Mater Dei's road trip will continue as they head out to face Nashville at 1:00 p.m. on January 20th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Illinois (Nashville is ranked 34th, while Mater Dei is ranked 12th). As for Breese Central, they will square off against Alton at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Alton is coming into the game hot, having won their last five games.
