Basketball Recap: Axtell Comes Up Short

It was a proper cat-fight when Axtell duked it out with Howells-Dodge on Monday. The Axtell Wildcats had to suffer through a 70-37 loss at the hands of the Howells-Dodge Jaguars. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 205th, while the Jaguars are ranked 55th).

Axtell's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Brandt Modlin, who posted nine points and five rebounds, and Jacob Halvorsen, who earned 16 points in addition to eight boards and three steals. What's more, Modlin also posted an 80% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's achieved since back in February of 2024.

With the loss, Axtell broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 11-14. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.0 points over those games. As for Howells-Dodge, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-5 record this season.

As of now, neither Axtell nor Howells-Dodge have any future games scheduled.
