Basketball Recap: Newman Grove/St. Edward Comes Up Short

Newman Grove/St. Edward played a tough matchup on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They took a blow against the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors, falling 65-38. The Panthers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-15.

Despite the loss, Newman Grove/St. Edward still got an impressive performance from Kailey Patzel, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds. Patzel is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least nine every time she's taken the court this season.

Even though they lost, Newman Grove/St. Edward smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Leading Neligh-Oakdale to victory were Jaycee Gadeken and Jaquelin Luna-Duran. Gadeken dropped a double-double on 20 points and 16 steals, while Luna-Duran went 11 of 20 on her way to 24 points along with six boards and six steals. Those 24 points gave Luna-Duran a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Bree Kester, who posted eight points.

Newman Grove/St. Edward's defeat dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Neligh-Oakdale, they picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 2-7.

Newman Grove/St. Edward will venture away from home to square off against Elba at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Newman Grove/St. Edward is facing Elba at the right time seeing as Elba is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Neligh-Oakdale, they will host Niobrara/Verdigre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
