Baseball Preview: Gillespie Miners vs. Roxana Shells

The Gillespie Miners have the luxury of staying home for another game and will welcome the Roxana Shells at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Gillespie: 3.6, Roxana: 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Gillespie is hoping to deliver their fans another blowout on Monday, just like they did against Hillsboro (and have done all season long). Gillespie never let Hillsboro onto the board and left with a 6-0 victory on Friday.

Luke Schuckenbrock made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. Schuckenbrock was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and a stolen base.

In other batting news, Tristen Wargo was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. He is on a roll when it comes to hits, as he's now hit three or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Colin Griffith, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.

Meanwhile, it was a hard-fought contest, but Roxana had to settle for a 5-4 loss against Salem on Thursday.

Roxana also got a good showing from Trevor Gihring, who tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

At the plate, Sean Maberry was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

Gillespie is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 21-7 record this season. As for Roxana, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 19-12.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Gillespie has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Roxana struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
