Football Recap: Jefferson County Patriots vs. Sevier County Smoky Bears
Jefferson County won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Friday. They lost 35-14 to the Sevier County Smoky Bears. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Patriots have suffered against the Smoky Bears since October 24, 2014.
Jefferson County's loss came despite strong showings from Skylar Thomas and Shawn Jackson. Thomas rushed for 157 yards, while Jackson gained 61 total yards and two touchdowns.
Sevier County got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Cooper Newman out in front who threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns while completing 85% of his passes, and also punched in a rushing score. That's the most total yards Newman has posted since back in October of 2023. Tegan Avera helped Newman out on the ground, rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown, while also picking up 59 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Jefferson County's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 1-1. As for Sevier County, their victory bumped their record up to 2-0.
Jefferson County will take on Science Hill at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Sevier County, they will head out to square off against Lenoir City at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sevier County is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road dating back to last season.
