George West and Mathis pushed the score to 14-6 the last time they played Mathis, but on Thursday defenses reigned supreme. The Longhorns fell just short of the Pirates by a score of 2-1. Longhorns fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Pirates since on Thursday.

Trevor Poe spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

George West has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-18-2 record this season. As for Mathis, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-14.

George West does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mathis, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against West Oso at 6:30 p.m. The Bears will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Pirates surely won't give up without a fight.
