Baseball Game Preview: Brawley Wildcats vs. Cathedral Phantoms

The Brawley Wildcats will challenge the Cathedral Phantoms at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Brawley fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Palm Desert on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Aztecs by a score of 5-4. The Wildcats' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Sergio Garcia put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Garcia was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one RBI.

In other batting news, Jacob Magana made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Tate Preece was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

Meanwhile, Cathedral was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at the hands of St. Francis.

Cathedral also got a good showing from Nicholas Overton, who tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Overton is becoming a predictor of the Phantoms' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 5-2 (and 4-7 when he doesn't).

Cathedral's loss dropped their record down to 9-9. As for Brawley, they now have a losing record of 9-10.
