Basketball Recap: Marcos de Niza Takes a Loss

Marcos de Niza was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat. They were outmatched by the Mesquite Wildcats and fell 117-9. The Padres were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 71-4.

Kiana Greer was Marcos de Niza's leading scorer, having posted three points. Elyanna Carbajal held things down on the boards with six rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mesquite to victory, but perhaps none more so than Navae Guidry, who went 9 for 12 on her way to 22 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. The matchup was Guidry's ninth in a row with at least ten points. Lucy Fisher was another key player, going 8 of 12 en route to 18 points in addition to eight boards and six steals.

Marcos de Niza's loss dropped their record down to 4-18. As for Mesquite, they pushed their record up to 22-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marcos de Niza won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Cactus Shadows at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Cactus Shadows is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.5 points per game this season. As for Mesquite, they will face off against St. Mary's at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Mesquite knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past nine contests -- so hopefully St. Mary's likes a good challenge.
