Softball Recap: Waubonsie Valley Warriors vs. Neuqua Valley Wildcats

After flying high against DeKalb last Tuesday, Waubonsie Valley came back down to earth. The Waubonsie Valley Warriors fell just short of the Neuqua Valley Wildcats by a score of 5-4 on Thursday. Waubonsie Valley was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Neuqua Valley apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played last Monday.

Hannah Laub made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Grace Riggs, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

On Neuqua Valley's side, Ava Drehs spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up eight Ks. Drehs has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 12 consecutive pitching appearances.

At the plate, Nadia Casanova and Nalia Clifford did most of the damage at the plate: Casanova scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Clifford went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Another player making a difference was Jamie Heitman, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Waubonsie Valley now has a losing record at 10-11. As for Neuqua Valley, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-10.

Waubonsie Valley will be playing in front of their home fans against Bolingbrook at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Waubonsie Valley is facing Bolingbrook at the right time seeing as Bolingbrook is stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Neuqua Valley, they will head out on the road to take on Manteno at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Manteno is coming into the contest with six straight victories at home, so Neuqua Valley will have to stop a squad with plenty of momentum.
